Raed Fares is one of the most prominent secular civil society activists still living in Syria. He joined the first protests for freedom and democracy against the Assad regime in April 2011.
Fares openly criticizes extremist organizations which has resulted in assassination attempts against him by the Islamic State, Jabhat al Nusra, and Jund al Aqsa. He is the president of the Union of Revolutionary Bureaus (URB); a body that is devoted to civil society building and counter-terrorism. Fares employs over 400 men and women in addition to managing a local radio station, Fresh FM. He is the mastermind behind the iconic Kafranbel revolutionary banners that have captured the attention of the world.
